Before you build an online store, map the order

SL GroupSL Group journal

An online store starts with a product page, but the work continues after checkout. Before choosing a design, walk through one order from the customer's first question to the parcel arriving.

Define what you are selling

Choose a representative product and collect the information needed to buy it confidently: clear photographs, dimensions, options, availability and what is included. If customers ask the same question repeatedly, answer it on the product page. Agree on who owns the product information and who approves changes.

Variants deserve particular attention. Size, colour and pack quantity can affect stock, pricing and fulfilment. Give each sellable item an unambiguous reference so the website and the people packing orders mean the same thing.

Write down your delivery rules

List the areas you serve, how you calculate delivery, what happens with bulky items and when an order is ready for collection. Test awkward examples before launch: two products from different locations, an address outside your usual area and an order placed just before a holiday.

A developer can implement a clear rule. An unwritten exception tends to become a customer-support problem.

Plan payment outcomes, not just the pay button

Choose a payment provider based on your business requirements and confirm its current onboarding, charges and settlement terms directly. Your project brief should cover successful payments, declined payments, abandoned checkouts, refunds and duplicate notifications. Decide when an order is considered paid and who checks exceptions.

Choose a source of truth for stock

If you also sell in a physical shop, agree on which system owns stock and how updates move between channels. Ask what happens when a connection fails or two customers try to buy the final item. Test the recovery process with realistic examples rather than only testing the happy path.

Run a small launch rehearsal

  1. Place an order from a phone with a new customer account.
  2. Check the payment and order confirmation.
  3. Pick, pack and record dispatch or collection.
  4. Try an amendment, cancellation and refund scenario.
  5. Ask the team to locate the order without help from the developer.

Record problems as concrete steps that can be repeated. A checkout that works in a demonstration still needs to work for the people running your business every day. Explore our online-store website package when you are ready to turn the plan into a scope.
